Biography

Dr Haggai Kanenga’s research examines geopolitics, development, trade and foreign investment, with particular focsus on China’s global economic engagements. He currently leads research on geopolitical contestation in Zambia’s mining and infrastructure sectors and serves as Co-Principal Investigator on a study of sand mining in peri-urban Lusaka. Both projects are supported by the University of Zambia’s DRGS Seed Grant Programme (2026). Dr Kanenga completed his PhD at The Open University, UK, where he is continuing his research on Chinese investment in wind energy infrastructure in the UK and Germany through a three-year Visiting Fellowship. In 2024, he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Germany. He also served as an intern on the Graduate Board of Editors at the Socio-Economic Review (Oxford University Press). He holds a Master’s degree in International Trade from Southeast University, China, and a Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies from the University of Zambia. His wider interests include infrastructure, extractivism, technology, data and digital sovereignty in Africa.
